Memorial Medical Center, Springfield Clinic to Sponsor Second Annual Dan Adair, MD, Memorial Triathlon at Springfield YMCA


Online registration is now open for the second annual Dan Adair, MD, Memorial Triathlon on Sunday, Aug. 27, at the Gus and Flora Kerasotes YMCA, 4550 W. Iles Ave.

The triathlon will include competitive and noncompetitive courses. Adults and children of any age can compete in both the competitive and noncompetitive events, either individually or as part of a relay.

The triathlon will begin at 8 a.m. for the noncompetitive portion and at 9 a.m. for the competitive portion.

The noncompetitive race features a 100-yard swim, a 6.1-mile bicycle ride and a 1.1-mile run. The competitive course features a 400-yard swim, a 12-mile bicycle ride and a 3.1-mile (5K) run. Participants can register by visiting

For the noncompetitive event, the cost is $35 to participate as an individual or $70 for a group doing the relay. The cost increases to $40 for individuals and $80 for group relays if you register after July 7.

For the competitive event, the cost is $45 for individuals and $90 for a group doing the relay. The cost increases to $50 for individuals and $100 for group relays if you register after July 7.

All participants who are not USAT Triathlon members must also pay an additional USAT one-day membership fee of $15 for adults (18 and older) and $10 for youth (17 and younger). All USA Triathlon members must bring their membership cards.

Awards will be presented to the first three overall finishers as well as to the winners in the Athena weight class (women who are 165 pounds or more) and the Clydesdale weight class (men who are 220 pounds or more).

Awards for the competitive race will be provided to the first three places per age division (beginning with 14 and younger; 15-19 years old; 20-24 years old; 25-29 years old and so on by five-year increments). An awards ceremony will begin at approximately 10:15 a.m.

Participants will be able to pick up their event packets at SportsCare from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, or on the day of the event from 6 to 7:30 a.m. All participants must show a photo ID at packet pickup.

A training program will begin for participants who want to train for the event. The program begins Monday, June 6. The cost is $75, and participants can sign up by calling 217-862-0351.

The event is named after Dr. Daniel Adair, an orthopedic surgeon for Springfield Clinic and founder and co-medical director of Memorial SportsCare, who died on Sept. 7, 2015. An avid athlete and triathlon competitor, Adair served as the co-department chair of the Springfield Clinic Orthopedic Group and medical director of orthopedic services at Memorial Medical Center. The triathlon has been sanctioned by USA Triathlon, the sanctioning authority for more than 2,000 diverse events ranging from grass-roots to high-profile races nationwide.
