The second Dan Adair, MD, Memorial Triathlon will take place Sunday, Aug. 27, at the Gus and Flora Kerasotes YMCA, 4550 W. Iles Ave.
The triathlon will include competitive and noncompetitive courses. Adults and children of any age can compete in both the competitive and noncompetitive events, either individually or as part of a relay.
The triathlon will begin at 7:30 a.m. for the noncompetitive portion and 8:30 a.m. for the competitive portion.
The noncompetitive race features a 100-yard swim, a 6.1-mile bicycle ride and a 1.1-mile run. The competitive course features a 400-yard swim, a 12-mile bicycle ride and a 3.1-mile (5K) run.
The event is named after Dr. Daniel Adair, an orthopedic surgeon for Springfield Clinic and founder and co-medical director of Memorial SportsCare, who died Sept. 7, 2015. An avid athlete and triathlon competitor, Adair served as the co-department chair of the Springfield Clinic Orthopedic Group and medical director of orthopedic services at Memorial Medical Center. The Dan Adair, MD, Memorial Triathlon is sponsored by Memorial SportsCare and the Springfield Clinic Orthopedic Group.
Prior to the start of the triathlon, a brief dedication to Adair will take place at 7:15 a.m. Ed Curtis, president and CEO of Memorial Health System, will lead the program.
For the noncompetitive event, the cost is $40 to participate as an individual or $80 for a group doing the relay.
For the competitive event, the cost is $50 for individuals and $100 for a group doing the relay.
All participants who are not USAT Triathlon members must also pay an additional USAT one-day membership fee of $15 for adults (18 and older) and $10 for youth (17 and younger). All USA Triathlon members must bring their membership cards.
Awards will be presented to the first three overall finishers as well as to the winners in the Athena weight class (women who are 165 pounds or more) and the Clydesdale weight class (men who are 220 pounds or more).
