Memorial Medical Center will host a free community seminar on diabetic nerve pain at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, in the Memorial Center for Learning and Innovation, 228 W. Miller St.

The two-hour seminar, “Diabetic Nerve Pain: Causes, Evaluation and Treatment of Peripheral Neuropathy,” will be held in the M.G. Nelson Family Auditorium on the first floor of the MCLI.

Peripheral neuropathy is caused by damage to the peripheral nerves in the arms and legs. Peripheral neuropathy is a common complication of uncontrolled diabetes and can cause nerve pain. With more than 30 million Americans living with diabetes, the complications can be a serious concern – especially nerve damage.

The event will feature presentations from two SIU Medicine physicians. Dr. James Gilchrist is a neurologist and the department chair of neurology. Dr. Samantha Dial is a neurologist and neurophysiologist.
